Glossary of Motor Terms
Copper machine, iron machine
In motors using ferrite magnets, the teeth of the armature core are thinned, the grooves (slots) are widened, and many windings (copper wires) are used. Such a design is known as a copper machine. On the other hand, in motors that use rare earth magnets, the teeth of the iron core are thickened to increase the magnetic flux. This is called an iron machine.
