Protect and Utilize

Aiming “To contribute to the growth of its business through the creation of intellectual added value”, Nidec endeavors to improve the value of its intellectual properties by establishing and reinforcing a professional IP organization and an internationally competitive IP portfolio. Specifically, our activities include portfolio management and rights utilization suited to each stage of the product lifecycle. Meanwhile, Nidec respects the intellectual property rights of other companies, receiving licenses or technologies from them as necessary or allowing them to use our intellectual property rights, thereby promoting multiple utilizations of intellectual properties.

Activity Promotion System

The intellectual property promotion system mainly supports business through two functions.

  • IP management function: Establishing and reinforcing IP portfolio construction and right utilization for each group company or business, and intellectual property risk reduction
  • IP governance function: Intellectual property information provision and suggestion for future management related to the Nidec group

In particular, we strengthen our information gathering and analytical capabilities and promote business activities strategically while analyzing the intellectual property information obtained. Based on the results of our analysis of technical trends, we not only suggest for further present business growth but make a proposal to a new business. Through these activities, we are in cooperation with a business manager or a management top as a business creator.

Nidec has also been actively working on M & A and has grown with group companies. In order to enable seamless intellectual property activities within the Nidec group, we focus on the unification of infrastructures, intellectual property related regulations, and intellectual property promotion system by One Nidec.

Personnel Development to IP Professional

We are committed to developing members having a wide range of business experience and various kinds of knowledge. In particular, young members are in charge of a specific technical area and plan and execute intellectual property activities for their technical area. Thereby they have an opportunity to become a person who can proactively perform and carry out various tasks. The technical area to be taken in charge is not fixed, but rotated to also give others the opportunity to experience business under different environments. Through these experiences, members gain new knowledge, and this is how we promote intellectual professional talent.

Also, the intellectual property members refer a skill map toward the aimed carriers. The skill map is used to quantify the skill level of the task and the range of the task experienced. It helps the user to grasp the next skill to be enhanced, or, to review the career plan. To improve our members, during period interviews with the seniors, the current state of the skill map is compared with the target career to review the career plan of each member.

Incentive Systems for Further Invention

Within the company, we encourage one of our Three Essential Attitudes, “Working hard and smart”. Our engineers actively create ideas and know-how for new technologies. Nidec has award systems to recognize efforts to develop inventions and contributions to business. Superior engineers are especially commended with the "Nidec Patent Badge Award" to show our appreciation and admiration towards their efforts.

There are three types of "Nidec Patent badge”; the silver badge, the gold badge, and the diamond badge, depending on the size of contribution, such as the number of patent applications. The number of winners in the Nidec group are increasing steadily every year.

In addition, other reward systems defined under Regulations for Employee Inventions, various reward / awards systems such as called “One Nidec Profit Contribution Grand Award” etc. are provided to promote motivation of engineers for further intellectual property activity. By continuing these activities in the Nidec group, we ensure construction of an IP portfolio that is competitive and superior.
