Environmental Performance 2021

Since FY2004, Nidec has been making and promoting a three-year mid-term environmental conservation plan, and acted based on the Sixth Mid-term Environmental Conservation Plan since FY2019.
The Plan, with the new pillars of “Increase the usage rate of renewable energies” and “Reuse and recycle resources more” combined with the existing environmental burden reduction activities, aimed to reduce the total three-year average (FY2019 – FY2021) of greenhouse gas (CO2), electricity, drainage volume, and waste from the FY2018 levels, and actions have been executed accordingly. These activities led us to achieve a certain level of success in the area of “Curb greenhouse gas emissions” and others, though some issues remained in the area of factory-generated waste.
- Greenhouse gas (CO2) emissions: Down 10%
- Use of fossil fuel-originated electricity: Down 10%
- Use of renewable energy-originated electricity: Up 15 points
- Water drainage: Down 7%
- Total waste disposal (final disposal volume of solid waste): Down 5%
Starting in FY2022, we will continue to improve our environmental performance based on the Seventh Mid-term Environmental Conservation Plan (FY2022 - FY2024).

Past environmental performance

Non-production sites

After the easing of the urgent “work from home” needs caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, a growing number of employees returned to the office-based work style. This change caused FY2021’s total greenhouse gas emissions generated by the use of electricity, gas, etc. to increase by approximately 23% from the FY2020 level.

The FY2021 result is about the same as the previous fiscal year’s, as we followed through on our electricity-saving measures and introduced renewable energies, while a growing number of employees returned to the office-based work style.

The FY2021 result is about the same as the previous fiscal year’s, as we followed through on the efficient use of water, while a growing number of employees returned to the office-based work style.

The final disposal volume of our waste in FY2021 decreased by approximately 36% from the FY2020 level, as we followed through on the efficient use of our resources, while a growing number of employees returned to the office-based work style.

Production sites

Our total drainage volume in FY2021 decreased by approximately 10% from the FY2020 level, due to more business bases using energy efficiently, and using renewable-energy-generated electricity.

Our total electricity usage in FY2021 decreased by approximately 4% from the FY2020 level, after more business bases started using energy efficiently. Furthermore, our renewable energy usage ratio increased by approximately 1.8 times from the FY2020 level.

Our total drainage volume in FY2021 decreased by approximately 3% from the FY2020 level, thanks to our efficient use of water.

Our final disposal volume of waste in FY2021 increased by approximately 14% from the FY2020 level, due to production increase based on our business growth strategy.
