Terakoya (temple-school) class

Nidec Shin-Kawasaki Technology Center, an R&D base for basic & applied motor research in Kanagawa Prefecture, has been holding an environmental class since 2015 for local children to learn Nidec’s actions to reduce environmental load via the research and development of motors. This class teaches children motors’ relations with the environment, gives them a tour to the Center’s research facility, and helps them learn how to make a coil motor.

Teaching how to make a coil motor in a booth at Keihanna Science Experience Festival

Annually since 2019, Nidec Keihanna Technology Center has been participating in Keihanna Science Experience Festival, an event for elementary school children hosted by Keihanna Science Communication Promotion Network, by setting up a booth to teach children how to make a coil motor. This event, the largest of its kind in the Keihanna area, is intended to offer children opportunities to experience the mystery and fun of science via science-based craft making and experience among other activities. Every year, many children come visit our booth to know about Nidec, motors, and the environment.

Work experience for junior high school students

Since FY2024, Nidec Central Technical Laboratory in the city of Muko accepts students for them to experience our workplace in Nidec’s unique work-experience program based on the work experience guidelines for junior high school students issued by Japan’s Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology. This program offers opportunities for participants to listen to the voices of product development, quality assurance, production engineering and many other personnel, to know more about their respective works and careers, while making simple motors, using an electronic microscope to inspect substances, and participating in other activities to experience the fun of product making.

Environmental & Product-making class for elementary school students

Nidec holds environmental and product-making classes at local elementary schools and other learning institutions to help deepen children’s interest in and understanding of the global environment and science. Our environmental class for elementary school students, launched in the city of Kyoto in FY2007, has had its 18th anniversary in 2024. FY2023 saw us hold the class a total of six times for 305 elementary school students in Kyoto Prefecture. In the class, students are shown motors used in their everyday lives, learn, among others, how motors are related to electric energy, see a presentation of motors’ future that Nidec aims to realize, and think with Nidec employees what they can do to conserve the global environment. The students also see and touch Nidec’s motors to enhance their interest in them, and practice crafting motors to learn the fun of product making.

Company tour for elementary school children

To help deepen people’s interest in and understanding of product making, Nidec Precision Corporation accepts students of local elementary schools for tour to the company, as part of the schools’ social studies classes. In the class, students see products on display and the company’s chronology, and listen to explanations on product development while visiting various floors of the company’s buildings. An elementary school even decided to visit us for the second time to give us a presentation on what their students learned during their first visit.
