Pottery class to prevent dementia

Since 2013, Nidec Drive Technology has been working with Nagaoka Health Center (Nagaoka Hospital) to hold a pottery class to prevent dementia annually. Pottery is known to be effective in prevention and rehabilitation of dementia, and Nagaoka Health Center has long been using pottery as part of its treatment of dementia patients. On the other hand, Nidec Drive Technology, a company with a large market share with its electronic potter’s wheels, had long been wanting to support those addressing social issues via business to help enhance society’s and its own sustainability. Thus, the company’s labor union proposed to the hospital to hold a pottery class, which has been held for more than 10 years so far.

Working with a local municipality to support disaster evacuees

In March 2014, the town of Shimosuwa, Nagano Prefecture, and NIDEC INSTRUMENTS CORPORATION signed an agreement on supporting earthquake and other disaster evacuees.

The agreement requires NIDEC INSTRUMENTS, during a disaster, to provide its head office’s parking lot and gymnasium as an evacuation center or an emergency evacuation center, provide support such as personnel and supplies to the extent possible, and work with administrative organizations to handle the disaster. NIDEC INSTRUMENTS is thus committed to supporting disaster relief activities as a member of the local community.

Support for the Sale of Merchandise by a Facility for People with Disabilities

Every month, Nidec Corporation’s head place and Building C of Nidec Park welcome people from a local facility for those with disabilities to have them sell bread, cookies, and other items made by people with intellectual disabilities seeking employment. This program, started in July 2012, is well received by Nidec employees, and held continuously. Likewise, bread made at a job assistance center is sold twice a month at Nidec Drive Technology Corporation’s Kyoto factory. The Philippines: Support for Terminal Cancer Patients

Nidec Philippines Corporation and Nidec Precision Philippines Corporation work for Kalinga ng Angel Foundation in the city of Binan, Laguna Province, to provide support for terminal cancer patients. With medical treatment expenses so high and the public system-based coverage of cancer treatment limited in the country, a great number of people are subject to health problems.
It is to improve this situation even slightly that the two companies provide medical expense-related support (e.g. covering prescription charges) for patients who cannot afford cancer treatment. The companies donated a wheelchair to the foundation.

Upcycling

Nidec Component Technology (Thailand) Co., Ltd. joined an upcycling project hosted by the industrial park where the company operates, and has been donating approximately 200 used plastic bottles every month since March 2022. “Upcycling” means to upgrade waste materials and unused items originally planned to be discarded into new, different products.
This above project aims to use plastic bottles and a plant fiber called Eichhornia crassipes (water hyacinth) to produce backpacks. 700 600ml plastic bottles can produce one backpack. The sustainable backpacks made in this project are distributed to local schools for free of charge, and used as children’s commuter bags.

Food Drive

The Nidec Group hold a food drive at multiple business bases that it runs in and outside Japan. “Food drive” is a program to collect leftover food items from home at schools and workplaces, and donate them to those in need. This volunteer activity can help reduce food loss and contribute to livelihood support.
Nidec Corporation’s head place and Building C of Nidec Park has been holding this program regularly since 2022. All the food items collected in this activity, 660kg in total, have been donated to Second Harvest Kyoto, an authorized NPO, and Food Bank Kyoto, a specified non-profit corporation. Those donated food items are delivered via NPOs to children and families in need of food. This program supports local people in need by donating other items such as books, shoes, toys, and diapers in addition to food in and outside Japan.

Blood donation

Multiple business bases of the Nidec Group in and outside Japan have been donating blood, with individual bases engaging in a blood drive twice to four times a year in collaboration with local Red Cross Societies.
