Nidec Corporation (TSE: 6594; OTC US: NJDCY) (“Nidec” or the “Company”) today announced that, jointly with Canon Inc. (“Canon”), it has calculated its CO2 emissions from Nidec-produced fan motors’ lifecycle stages, including raw material procurement, production, and distribution. The results of the calculation have been used, for the first time, as actual data from the calculation of the CO2 emissions from the lifecycle of a Canon’s office multifunction device (MFD) that installs Nidec products.
For the MFD utilizing the results of this calculation, Canon disclosed the SuMPO EPD (Eco Leaf) environmental label (“SuMPO EPD”*1), which is administered by the Sustainable Management Promotion Organization (“SuMPO”). This is one of Nidec's pioneering efforts to reduce CO2 emissions through utilizing by organizations in the supply chain. At the same time, Nidec considers it important to disclose environmental information to customers and investors, and will strengthen these efforts.

With its industry-leading motor technology, energy efficiency improving measures, and development of light, thin, short, and small products and others, Nidec had been greatly contributing to reducing CO2 emissions. In particular, technological innovations such as the use of resin-recycling materials in a manufacturing process to reduce the ratio of virgin materials; and the creation of a unique, optimum magnetic circuit design to miniaturize a motor section’s physical size by approximately 20% from an existing Nidec motor, contribute to reducing the environmental impacts of society as a whole. Nidec stays committed to working with more companies to gradually increase the number of its products for the lifecycle CO2 emissions calculation, and contributing to decarbonizing its entire supply chain, and to realizing a sustainable society.
The Nidec Group’s CO2 emissions reduction targets:
Based on the SBTi*2 standard, the Nidec Group aims to reduce its CO2 emissions in Scopes 1 and 2 by 42%, and those in Scope 3 (Categories 1 & 11) by 25%, from the FY2022 levels by FY2030. CDP’s*
3 2024 climate change survey saw the Nidec Group recognized to be on the “A list” – a group of companies with highest scores – for its transparency in disclosing climate change-related information, and for its leadership in implementing actions.
*1. SuMPO EPD (Eco Leaf): A Japanese environmental label that quantitatively discloses environmental information on products using the LCA (life cycle assessment) method.
*2. SBTi (Science Based Targets initiative): SBTi is an international initiative to encourage companies to set greenhouse gas emission reduction targets based on climate science. Nidec’s CO2 emissions reduction targets were validated by SBTi in 2024.
*3. CDP: A UK-based non-profit organization that operates a global system to disclose companies’ and municipalities’ environmental information. In 2024, 24,800 companies, which are equivalent to two-thirds of the world’s market capitalization, disclosed their environmental information via CDP.
