Glossary of Motor Terms
Wire types
Wires are always used in the production of motors. There are many different types of wire, but describing them all in detail would require the writing of an entire book. This is simply a fundamental overview of the names and styles of the most common types of wire.
Solid wire
A single strand wire
Strand wire
‘Strand’ in English usually refers to something long and thin (or narrow). A strand wire is a bunch of thin electrical wires, sometimes referred to as a litz wire.
Litz wire
A twisted strand wire
Magnet wire
Magnet wire is used to make electromagnets. In most cases it is a single wire but in some cases, strand wire or litz wire may be used to avoid eddy current loss.
