Glossary of Motor Terms
Solenoid
A type of actuator whose conceptual construction is shown below. When the winding is energized by turning switch S on, a thrust force is generated on the iron rod, causing it to plunge (move into the winding hole). The rod is called a plunger. The plunger stops when it reaches the base. Normal solenoids are linear actuators, but the one shown below is a photograph of a rotary type.
