Sinusoidal voltage
Voltages that can be expressed by cosωt, sinωt, or their total, the difference between them or the total of them multiplied together, are sinusoidal waves as seen in (a). Sinusoidal voltages are those ideally suited to being applied to the windings of an AC or brushless DC motor. However, the counter electromotive force (CEMF, back-emf) is not always sinusoidal and often includes higher harmonics, mainly the 5th, as shown in (b)
