Rectification via commutator
The alternating current generated in the armature winding of a DC generator is converted into direct current by a commutator. In this sense the commutator is a rectifier mechanism, but we say “These windings (coils or conductors) are subjected to commutation.” This phrase is often used when we discuss the mechanism of a DC motor
