Inverter
An inverter can be interpreted as a short word for inverse-converter. A converter is a device to change alternating current (AC) to direct-current (DC), while the inverter is a device to convert DC to AC. A 3-phase inverter consists of 6 switching elements and 6 diodes to provide 3-phase current to a 3-phase AC motor. A major application is the drive circuit of brushless DC motors. The combination of brushes and a commutator in a DC motor can be considered as a sort of mechanical inverter.
