Detent torque
The figure below shows a stable angular position of the rotor in a doubly grooved motor in which a permanent magnet is used. The allowable maximum torque that does not cause the rotor to rotate without a winding current is referred to as a detent torque.
The cause of cogging torque and that of detent torque are the same. Cogging sounds like an undesirable torque ripple in speed control while the latter has a positive meaning for keeping position against the load.
