Glossary of Motor Terms
Carbon brush, Graphite brush, Metallic graphite brush
Graphite, compression moulded at high temperature, is used as one of the standard brushes for the commutation mechanism of DC motors. When mixed with copper powder it becomes a metal graphite brush, which is often used for low-voltage DC motors. Unlike a metal graphite brush, they are black. They create fewer sparks, but one disadvantage is that they are more likely to make contact voltage drop with the commutator higher than with metallic graphite brush.
